new Pucca episodes
now that Pucca has begun airing... already people have been recording and uploading episodes on to youtube. I can not believe how fast it happened. I guess thats a good sign. So check it out. a little sneak preview for the U.S. and Canada. the broadcast dates for Pucca in the states are as follows: "Toon Disney's Jetix programming block on weekdays will see the premiere of several new shows and marathon programming events next month. Pucca joins Jetix in its US premiere on Monday September 18, 7p, and then moves to its regular time period on Monday, September 25 at 8:30p."
this is our first episode, so we were still figuring out who the characters were and what they did. it's not our finest episode by any means, but it has it's merits.
this episode features a ninja-eating plant. it's got a "cat came back" vibe to the story, mixed with that old "little shop of horrors" chestnut. not the most original idea.... but YOU try to come up with 78 storylines!
my wife Jocelan storyboarded it, and i was in charge of the direction. i even got to animate some scenes! (the underwater sequence).
enjoy.

PUCCA ON THE AIR!
finally, Pucca the series is on the air...... in the U.K. and Netherlands. It is set to come out in the US sometime soon on Disney's "Jetix" block on ABC .. i think.. i hear they are changing one of the disney cartoon channels into a Jetix channel, where Pucca will find its US home.
If you are lucky enough to see it in Europe, you will be seeing it in it's full, unadultarated form. with few censorship edits. We had a lot of freedom on the show, which was great. but some of the stuff we did is biting us in the butt now, as the FCC rules in the states don't allow certain content from reaching our children's extremely fragile minds.
In the meantime, check out this promo material we created. which was highlighted in a recent issue of STASH magazine. there's also an article about it at COLD HARD FLASH
and don't forget to check out the official Pucca site at the JETIX website.
also here you can watch our interstitials below...

hello from annecy
here i am in Annecy for the international animation festival, which kicks off tommorrow. Its a very beautifull little town nestled near the Swiss Alps. I'm excited to se some of the films here... i just got my festival package and it's 3 huge thick books that we had to hoof all the way across town back to the hotel .. the festival tote bags were'nt ready yet... damn them! Gonna see a pre-view of cars.. lookin forward to that ... but there's tons of films that look really good... i'll let you know which ones i thought were best.
venice-like canalspedal boatsdalla, kirsten, and greg pondering if we should rent a boat... it's quite warm.
dallas in our hotel room... "Hotel de Paris" small but quaint

OH HAAAAA!!!
this is totally messed up! a grown man in a pretty pink dress dancing and singing with a bunch of children and people in various costumes in a happy rainbow land. shingo is this guy from the Japanese pop boy band "Smap" they're so popular they have their own variety show. he has this character that he plays called "shingo mama" which i suppose either represents his mother or himself as a mom. he does a segment on the show and i think this is the music video that accompanies it. Enjoy the weird wonderful over the top saccharine!

SUPERFLAT MONOGRAM
OMG you have to watch this! I'm a huge fan of Takeshi Murakami's Superflat movement, and it seems as though they made a crazy short film/ad for Louis Vuitton. I am totally inspired by this stuff.

COWBOY DOY-YOY
Well. I thought i would try my hand at a little photoshop "painting" of one of my drawings of a cowboy. It's pretty novice I know...but it is my first attempt so that being said.. let me have it! don't hold back! i've got my criticism helmet on.. so i can take it.
i often draw wonky cowboys like this in my doodles. I'd like to do a cowboy show. The thing is... i really have no intrest in westerns.. so i have no idea why i like to cartoon them. maybe its the very fact that i don't like them.

Doooooodles
here's a couple pages of doodles from todays music spot. thats where we sit with the composer and go through each episode and figure out the music and score... it can take several hours.
this is Dallas (fellow co-director) saying "phenomenal" its a good word to say when you think something is very good. It's a word I have heard him say. That's Greg (the main director) on his head. it's not a very good likeness of him... he has a curling rock in his hand (how canadian). the guy screaming in the bottom corner is the composer Hal Foxton Beckett... he gets upset when we make changes to his music.. but thats because he cares. I'm the one saying "poo". it's something i often say...and if i'm not saying it... i'm probably thinking it.
here's some very warbled doodles of pucca characters... i like to draw them off model on purpose.. probably because their actual model is so perfect and symetrical. sometimes i wish the show was that warped.
Mo Peanart
see how confidently he serenades you with his ukelele. It seems as though it's aimed in the wrong direction. Does he not notice the maiden in the distance? How she pains to be near his... nut?

Greeting Cards
here's a bunch of greeting cards i made a few years ago and sold them in a local art store. I sold about half of the batch i printed.. but i never continued it. so i got a bunch left over if anyone wants one... i'd rather people used them then have them sit here in a box. they are all blank inside.
Draw-ins
a few excerpts from the sketchbook.
this guy's listening to his mini-disk player. He's feeling embarrassed that he's using such old technology... and that he actually paid for his music.
I'm sure the government has experimented with this kind of thing. As much as it's bad for the planet.... i'd really like to see some genetically altered freakaziod creatures.
Here is Monsieur Oyster. He is a solitary creature, though he seems to enjoy going for the occasional drive. Prized possession? his pearl of course!
Cute musselooom
I made this at work while i had some free moments. one of the character designers on Pucca saw me working on it and flipped out. "oh my god thats sooooo cuute!" she said. so i sent her the image. she printed it out and hung it up at her desk. i felt kind of honored.
